Pier’s Gorge

It looks like I am going to go into a three post run on Michigan Parks. Last week was Lake Fumee and I suppose next week I will write about Lake Antoine Campground. This week we have Pier’s Gorge.

Key Features:

  • Location: Norway, Michigan
  • Activities: Hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, whitewater rafting
  • Features: Scenic gorges, waterfalls, rapids, wildlife viewing
  • Trails: The park features several trails, including the Piers Gorge Scenic Hiking Trail, which offers stunning views of the river.
  • Camping: There are camping facilities available within the park.
  • Recreation Passport: A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for entry to the park.

Review

The same day I took some pictures at Fumee Falls this year we decided to make a quick trip to Pier’s Gorge. Just off Highway 8 as it crosses over from Wisconsin to Michigan across the Menominee River. This road travels west along the river turning from a paved to a gravel road before reaching the entrance to the park. A small rangers hut and parking lot marks this hiking trail.

The trail leads along the the Menominee River with multiple spots to put in rafts for white water rafting. Off the trail are rocky areas that you can climb on to see and get close to the river.

While the trails are rough they are well traveled. At times though the trail is up massive rock formations that any one with mobility issues would have issues with.

This trip was quick. My wife and I spent maybe a half hour here as our kids were waiting for us back at the campground. But next year we plan on making more time for Pier’s Gorge. And maybe I will re-review the trails at that time.

In any event feel free to comment below if you have been to Pier’s Gorge or plan on going. Side note I am especially interested in a possible white water rafting trip here in the future.
