Review

This trail lies in the flats of the Fox River Valley south of downtown Appleton. West end of the trail begins at Old Oneida Street. You can follow it east to Law Street where it then crosses to the north side of the river via an old train bridge. This bridge has been converted to accommodate the walking trail. Continuing on the north side of the river to a retirement community beneath the College Avenue bridge,

Walking along this trail you can see the paper mills that have been converted in to Apartments. The beautiful architecture of the Lawrence University campus hangs over the river valley to the north. The residents of Appleton have been putting money into this area for years to convert the industrial paper and power plants to a beautiful nature area to live in.

Geese, cormorants, ducks, and pelicans can all be seen in the river from this trail. Bald eagles and seagulls will soar over your head as you walk. You will also see red wing black birds and swallows perched in the fences you walk past.

Near Law Street a small hydroelectric generator has been placed for educational purposes. This site has informational signs with facts about Appleton’s place in history.

Pullmans At Trolley Square, Fratello’s Waterfront, and Stone Arch Brewery are restaurants that sit close to this trail to offer a place to eat and drink. As well as a few other small bars are situated near the trail. These venues offer an alternative to the busy restaurants and bars in the downtown area.

The Hydroelectric Heritage Trail is one leg of multiple trails in this area. It creates a short cut across the Fox Trot Trail, which connects it to the Trail. Both of which I plan to review in the future. Appleton has created many options for hiking in the valley.

These trails are my favorite part of this city. They provide a place to get away from the busy downtown area. With more and more events being hosted in the Appleton area there are going to be times where you want to take a break. A leisurely hike down in the river valley is a great option.

If you are familiar with this trail let us know below. And also let us know if there are more places in the valley you want to read about.
