Terrell’s Island

Last week my wife and I walked the 2 mile trail on Terrell’s Island. But to say that the trail is only 2 miles is disingenuous. Terrell’s Island is a State Wild Life area in the middle of Lake Butte Des Morts. The entire explorable area consists of two trails that are built on man made peninsulas that stretch out from the island into the lake. One trail is 2.1 miles long and the other trail is 1.5 miles. However both of these distances are one way so the actual trip is double the noted distance. So before you go get ready to walk.

Key Features of Terrell’s Island

  • Location: Situated on the shores of Lake Butte des Morts, Terrell’s Island is a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts and birdwatchers.
  • History: Originally constructed as a nesting area for pelicans, the island has since evolved into a thriving habitat for various wildlife species.
  • Trails: The island features a network of well-maintained trails that wind through diverse landscapes, including wetlands, forests, and meadows.
  • Wildlife: Terrell’s Island is home to a variety of bird species, including waterfowl, songbirds, and raptors. Visitors may also encounter deer, turtles, and other wildlife.
  • Recreational Activities: Popular activities at Terrell’s Island include hiking, biking, birdwatching, and nature photography.
  • Accessibility: The island is accessible year-round, although trails may be closed during inclement weather.

Review

For years I have looked at maps around the area. One of the features of Lake Buttes Des Morts was this unique wetland that I believed was privately owned. But when my wife and I recently looked for new trails to walk we found Terrell’s Island was listed as a state wild life area.

Located just outside of Omro WI down a side road off of Highway 21. Local conservation groups have been working to restore the wetlands and create habitat for local wild life.

Walking down the trails we almost immediately flushed green herons from the waters edge. Cattails and ponds of giant lily pads quickly gave way to lake Butte Des Morts itself. Seagulls, pelicans, and ducks swarmed the shores of the near by islands and fly over head as you walk.

The walk is just out to the end of either peninsula and back. But there is more than enough to see as you go.

We plan on returning soon and hope to seem more magnificent wild life below.
