Back in June my family and I decided to camp at Rock Island State Park in Wisconsin. This out of the way camp ground on an isolated island provided a relaxing stay away from our normal life.

Review

The trip to Rock Island is half of the fun. Your journey starts in Door County a beautiful peninsula in Wisconsin. Known for cherries, wine, and beautiful views of lake Michigan. You will drive north from Sturgeon bay to Gills Rock at the tip of the peninsula. Just be careful not to get caught up in the various tourist locations as you go, the ferries do not run 24/7.

You will then need to take a ferry to Washington Island. Washington Island is another destination that tourists love but do not get distracted by School House Beach.

Once you arrive at the ferry to Rock Island grab your back packing gear and purchase a ticket. It’s a short ride on a small ferry to the shores of Rock Island and the Boat House.

But your journey is not done yet. Depending on where your camp site is you’ll have up to a mile and a half hike before your done.

If your looking for a luxury vacation Rock Island is not for you. Your camp site is an opening in the forest and nothing more. The nearest bathroom and water source is back at the Boat House. And on the rare occasion when a storm works up the waters of Lake Michigan they will cancel ferry service because of the waves.

However the peaceful nights, beautiful sunsets are more than worth it. You will see nature away from grime of the cities.

Historic places like the Pottawatomie Light House, Thordarson Village Ruins lay along adventurous walking trails that circle the island.

Rock and sandy beaches surround the island. And ancient Native American rock carvings decorate the cliffs.

The trip might seem daunting but its worth it. We definitely plan on returning soon.

  1. Any time I find myself on Rock Island is a pleasant memory. Have been going there & Washington Island for decades! Family to visit & quiet time with my husband, just walking on the paths. The boat house and history of the place is interesting. Looking forward to the next time. Fall colors are amazing! 😍👍
