This week I wanted a shorter trail so we chose Konkapot Creek Trail. A quick drive to Kaukauna from church was a great choice for an early afternoon hike.

Key Features

  • Gravel Surface: The trail primarily consists of a gravel surface, suitable for walking, running, and cycling.
  • Moderate Length: It’s a relatively short trail, measuring approximately 1.2 to 1.25 miles (2.0 km), making it ideal for a quick or leisurely outing.
  • Easy Difficulty: The trail is generally considered easy and stroller-friendly, with minimal elevation change.
  • Konkapot Creek Scenery: The trail follows the winding path of the Konkapot Creek, offering peaceful natural views along the waterway.
  • Connection to the CE Trail: At its southern end, the Konkapot Creek Trail directly connects to the CE Trail, which is a longer route that travels east-west through the Fox Valley.
  • Dog-Friendly: Leashed dogs are typically welcome on the trail.
  • Nature Observation: It provides opportunities for birding and enjoying the surrounding natural, wooded environment.
  • Connection to Horseshoe Valley Park: A short connector path near the northern endpoint leads to Horseshoe Valley Park, which offers amenities like a playground, picnic pavilion, and baseball diamonds.
  • Part of the “Loop the Locks” Network: The trail is integrated into the larger regional trail system known as “Loop the Locks.”
  • Accessible Parking: Parking is available at the trailhead, often mentioned near the corner of Dodge Street and Island Street.

Review

We drove down into the Fox River Valley in Kaukauna to find the trail parking lot. Just off of Dodge St, the parking lot was less that a block from 1000 Islands Nature Preserve.

My wife, daughter, and I got out of our car and prepped for our hike. Just as I got out my camera, I saw a group of Blue Jays flying into the brush across the little creek.

I had hopes that we would see a lot of birds on our hike. While we did see a Turkey Vulture, a Red Tail Hawk, and various other song birds, they were not giving me the best pictures..

The trail was nice though. The gravel path was well taken care of and stretched between Dodge St and Hwy CE where it connected with the CE Trail.

Our casual hike along the Konkapot Creek led us past a connecting trail to Horseshoe Park. Then over the first of three bridges on the trail.

That first bridge was over a connecting water way from the pond at Horseshoe Park. The other two were over the creek itself as it wound back and forth through the canyon.

The trail was pretty heavily used by hikers. Many of which were also walking dogs.

Eventually we reached the CE Trail. Fall flowers blooming again because of the warm weather yesterday lined either side of the trail.

After pausing at the south end of the trail we started back down the sunny path. The return trip was quick as the trail was only 1.2 miles long. But we did take our time to capture photos of the fall colors.

This trail is perfect for a quick hike. Or you could even make it a longer hike by including other trails. Going east on the CE Trail to Hillcrest Dr you could use sidewalks to hook up with the 1000 Island State Conservancy Area trail.

However due to having injured my ankle two weeks ago we wanted to take it easy. We will probably try to take this hike again some day.

Thanks again for reading. Leave a message below and hope you stop by next week.
